How to tell which printing you have

  • 1st Edition has the black "Edition 1" stamp at the lower left of the picture.
  • Shadowless has no stamp, and the picture box has no drop shadow along its right edge.
  • Unlimited has no stamp and does have the shadow.
  • Base Set 2 (4/130) and Legendary Collection (3/110) are later reprints — different set numbers, different values. Check the number at the bottom of your card.

What changes the price

Condition

On a 25-year-old card, condition is the whole game. Surface scratches, edge whitening, and centering decide the grade — and the gap between a played copy and a gem-mint copy is worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Professional grading

PSA, Beckett (BGS), and CGC seal the card in a slab and score it 1 to 10. A PSA 10 1st Edition Charizard has recently averaged $343,098 versus about $9,058 ungraded — grading multiplies the value more than any other factor.

Which printing you have

The "Edition 1" stamp and the shadow on the picture box separate the three printings. 1st Edition is worth roughly nine times a Shadowless copy ungraded, and about forty times an Unlimited copy.
